CNN Covers WeightWatchers Jumping Into The Prescription Weight Loss Drug Business
An ever-growing issue, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that obesity in the United States affects 100.1 million (41.9%) adults and 14.7 million (19.7%) children, and accounts for approximately $147 billion in annual health care costs. With the health of this generation—and the next–on the line, many individuals find themselves turning towards non-traditional methods for weight-loss.
According to a recent article from CNN, WeightWatchers, now known as WW International, is set to buy Sequence, a telehealth subscription service that connects patients with doctors who can prescribe weight-loss and diabetes drugs.
The article goes on to state that the $106 million acquisition of Sequence will give WeightWatchers a foothold into the growing market for prescription drugs to tackle obesity and other weight conditions.
“There is growing scientific evidence that, for some, prescription chronic weight management medications can address the biological components of obesity,” WeightWatchers said in a presentation about its Sequence purchase, Monday.
Unfortunately, medication-assisted weight loss treatments can be costly when used frequently over an extended period of time.
Steve Suntala, executive director of New Pathways Clinic in Cleveland, commented on the new service WeightWatchers will be offering, “Really what they are offering is a $99 subscription for the right to have a doctor prescribe you a $1300 a month medication that insurance won’t cover for you, when you could just do our program for $400 a month and it includes the medical care as well as the medication!”
