Q & A

Interviewer: Hi Gabrielle. Thanks for joining us today. Let’s get right into it. What is your professional title and what will you be doing at New Pathways Clinic?

Gabrielle: I am a certified family practice and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, FNP-BC and PMHNP-BC. I’ll be working as the nurse practitioner for the Dublin office at New Pathways Clinic.

Interviewer: And how long have you been in the medical field? Do you have previous experience with Ketamine?

Gabrielle: I have been working in outpatient family practice and psychiatry for the past ten years. I have been reading about ketamine and other alternative treatments, including psilocybin, for treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and PTSD, since I was in graduate school. I am very excited to move into clinical practice using ketamine to treat mental health disorders.

Over the years, I have worked with many patients in outpatient psychiatry for whom traditional medication and psychotherapy produced minimal improvement. It’s exciting to be a part of such an innovative treatment that can produce results that traditional medication alone could not.

Interviewer: Absolutely. Where did you attend school? Did you always intend on going into alternative medicine like this?

Gabrielle: I attended The Ohio State University College of Nursing for my nursing and nurse practitioner training. Over the past several years, I have been continuing to keep up with studies on alternative treatments like ketamine and psilocybin-assisted therapy. I have been really impressed with the results seen in these studies. What’s even more interesting is reading some of the studies done decades ago and seeing very impressive results from those studies as well. It’s great to see these so-called alternative treatments finally go mainstream so people can get treatment that can be life-changing.

I had been increasingly interested in going into more alternative treatments in my clinical practice when this opportunity presented itself. I’ve seen firsthand in clinical practice the limitations of more traditional psychotropic medications, and it’s exciting to work in a clinic that provides another form of treatment to augment clients’ existing mental health care.

Interviewer: What drew you to New Pathways specifically? Was it their mission statement, practice, etc.?

Gabrielle: I was immediately drawn to New Pathways. I was very impressed that this is a nurse practitioner-run clinic by someone who has conducted clinical trials and has extensive experience with ketamine. When I went to meet everyone at their clinic in Cleveland, I was also really impressed with how well the clinic is run and just how committed everyone is to patient care.

Interviewer: And what are your thoughts on Ketamine, Spravato nasal spray, and other alternative treatments compared to more traditional treatments?

Gabrielle: I’ve worked in outpatient clinics for nearly ten years now and have seen firsthand the limitations of traditional mental health treatments. It’s exciting to see ketamine go more mainstream as an additional treatment for mental health disorders.

Depression, anxiety, and PTSD can be remarkably difficult to treat, and we should be using every available effective treatment in addition to our more traditional treatments. It’s a very exciting time to be in mental health as less traditional, highly effective alternative treatments finally move into mainstream medicine.

Interviewer: What are you hoping to accomplish by working at New Pathways?

Gabrielle: My focus is entirely on our patients. I want individuals to come to us and have an excellent experience and see improvements in their symptoms and their daily lives.

Interviewer: And if you could share some advice with patients who are looking into trying Ketamine treatments for the first time, what would it be?

Gabrielle: I would say, don’t let fear prevent you from seeking care. Navigating the healthcare system can be daunting and intimidating, even for patients with a lot of experience. Additionally, it can be a little unnerving to seek ketamine treatment, which many people may have limited knowledge about initially.

I’d recommend asking questions about any specific concerns and being open about any fears or anxiety regarding seeking treatment. We can explain the process, the science behind the treatment, what to expect, and ways we can make the process comfortable and pleasant for them.

Interviewer: Do you have any final thoughts or comments regarding yourself, New Pathways, Ketamine, Spravato, or just tips for boosting mental health in general that you’d like to share?

Gabrielle: I’m just very excited to join New Pathways Clinic and be a part of an exciting new chapter in mental health treatment. Over the next several years, I think we’re going to see more alternative treatments go mainstream in psychiatry, and I believe these treatments and this approach will revolutionize how we see and treat mental health disorders. Like many nurse practitioners, I believe in a holistic approach to healthcare, and I’m glad to see medicine starting to better-incorporate alternative treatments and holistic/wellness care into more traditional mental health care.

In terms of general tips for boosting mental health, I would emphasize the importance of self-care, seeking support when needed, maintaining healthy relationships, and engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment. Mental health is a journey, and it’s essential to prioritize our well-being and to seek help when we need it.

Interviewer: Wonderful. Thank you for your time, Gabrielle.
