Columbus, Ohio, is home to serene spots perfect for reflection and mental health improvement. Your day-to-day routine might keep you constrained within the city center or the suburban sprawl, but don’t overlook the calming environments around the area. These spaces are perfect for simple walks or peaceful moments that can work wonders for your day.

We’re here to highlight some of the best quiet spaces in Columbus where you can find tranquility and support your mental well-being.

The Importance of Quiet Spaces for Mental Health

Quiet spaces are essential for improving mental health, even if they seem harder to find than ever before. In today’s fast-paced world, finding a moment of peace can be challenging, but you can’t discount the power of maintaining your emotional and psychological well-being in the face of that speed.

Research has shown that spending quiet time out in the world can significantly reduce stress, anxiety, and depression (more on this below). It allows the mind to rest, recover, and rejuvenate, which is particularly important in urban environments where noise and overstimulation are common.

This is even more important in the days and weeks following a ketamine infusion treatment, when you can benefit from integrating the experience into the rest of your life. A quiet space that’s convenient to home can be a major help.

Benefits of Quiet Spaces

  1. Stress Reduction: Natural environments, like Jeffrey Park in Columbus, help lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. A study by Roger Ulrich, et al. (1991), found that participants who viewed natural scenes experienced faster recovery from stress compared to those who viewed urban scenes.
  2. Improved Mood: Exposure to nature has been linked to enhanced mood and emotional well-being. A review by Marc Berman, et al. (2012), indicated that interacting with natural environments can improve mood and cognitive function.
  3. Mental Clarity and Focus: Quiet spaces free from urban distractions help improve concentration and mental clarity. This concept is supported by Attention Restoration Theory, which suggests that natural environments replenish cognitive resources that are depleted in demanding urban settings. You can achieve this same effect in places like the Columbus Metropolitan Library.
  4. Physical Health Benefits: Time spent in nature is also associated with physical health benefits, such as lower blood pressure, reduced heart rate, and overall improved physical well-being..

For Columbus residents, spending time out in public (but quietly) can be a practical way to incorporate these mental health benefits into daily life. Whether it’s a quick visit during a lunch break or a weekend hike, these activities can be easily integrated into one’s routine.

We’ve featured some local parks, where nature is front and center, but with this piece we wanted to share places designed more specifically around quietude–not exclusive to nature preserves.

6 Quiet Spaces in Columbus

Columbus Metropolitan Library

Each branch of the Columbus Metropolitan Library features dedicated quiet zones with comfortable seating arrangements, perfect for uninterrupted reading or contemplation. These quiet areas are designed to minimize noise and distractions, creating a peaceful atmosphere ideal for mental relaxation.

Plus, you’re surrounded by good books!

Don’t overlook the power of an absorbing book. You can easily find books on mindfulness, meditation, and mental well-being.

For those who need an even quieter environment, many branches offer private study rooms. These rooms can be reserved and provide an isolated space for focused work or deep reflection, free from external interruptions.

The library’s design incorporates large windows and open spaces to allow natural light to flood in. It might seem overly simple, but this connection to the outside world can have a calming effect.

Jeffrey Park

Built in 1905, Jeffrey Mansion is a stunning example of early 20th-century architecture. The mansion, surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens, offers a glimpse into the past and provides a peaceful setting for reflection and contemplation.

Jeffrey Park spans over 40 acres, featuring open lawns, wooded areas, and well-maintained gardens. The park’s diverse landscapes offer numerous spots for quiet walks, picnics, and solitary reflection. The park includes several walking trails that wind through its scenic grounds; those trails provide a perfect setting for leisurely strolls, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and tranquility of the area.

Inniswood Metro Gardens

Inniswood Metro Gardens boasts several themed gardens, each offering unique beauty and tranquility. Highlights include the Rose Garden, Herb Garden, and Woodland Rock Garden. Each area provides a distinct sensory experience, from the fragrant herbs to the vibrant roses and serene woodland settings.

The gardens feature over two miles of scenic trails that wind through various landscapes, including woodlands, streams, and meadows. These trails offer a peaceful environment for walking, jogging, or simply soaking in the natural surroundings.

The gardens are home to a wide variety of plant species, meticulously arranged so that visitors can enjoy seasonal blooms, ornamental grasses, and carefully curated plant collections that inspire and uplift the spirit. The grounds include several water features, which add to the atmosphere.

Heads up, though: The gardens can get a little crowded when the weather is super nice!

Green Lawn Cemetery

The cemetery’s landscape is meticulously maintained, featuring rolling hills, mature trees, and beautifully landscaped gardens. These elements create a peaceful and visually appealing environment ideal for quiet walks and introspection.

Green Lawn Cemetery offers numerous walking paths that meander through its expansive grounds. These paths provide a serene setting for exercise, nature observation, and solitary reflection.

The cemetery is a designated urban wildlife sanctuary, home to a variety of birds, deer, and other wildlife. The presence of these animals adds to the tranquility and provides a natural setting that enhances mental well-being.

The Ohio State University Campus (in the Evenings!)

The OSU campus features numerous walkways that are beautifully lit in the evenings, providing a peaceful setting for reflective strolls. Paths around Mirror Lake, the Oval, and along the Olentangy River offer scenic routes for unwinding after a long day.

The campus is home to several historic buildings, including University Hall and Orton Hall. These structures, illuminated at night, create a picturesque and calming environment that invites reflection and contemplation.

The campus is abundant with green spaces, gardens, and tree-lined paths that come alive with a serene beauty in the evening light. Areas such as the Chadwick Arboretum offer a tranquil retreat for nature lovers.

The OSU campus often hosts evening events, including concerts, lectures, and art exhibitions. These events provide opportunities to engage with the community, learn new things, and enrich one’s mental well-being.

Speaking of OSU… The William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library

One more library while we’re here. If you’re looking for a quiet space on campus, we recommend the main OSU library, right in the heart of it all.

Back around 2008 and 2009, major restoration work revived the beauty of the William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library. The grand reading room was brought back to its original luster, and it now makes for a splendid place to sit and relax and read.

Pro tip: If you take the elevator to the top floor, you’ll find a nice quiet reading room with terrific views of campus.
